Important Testing Reminders: Testlet Information Pages, iPads During Testing, and Alternate Texts

Testlet Information Pages

Once a testlet is assigned to a student, the Testlet Information Page (TIP) becomes available in Educator Portal. Test administrators should access and view the TIP before beginning a student’s assessment and gather any needed supports. TIPs are secure documents. If printed, securely destroy all TIPs when testing is complete.

TIPs are included with every testlet and provide test administrators with information specific to that testlet, including exceptions to allowable supports. The TIPs also include alternate text to use with human read-aloud. While a test administrator normally may use all selected Personal Needs and Preferences (PNP) Profile supports, the TIP indicates when a support or tool cannot be used for a specific testlet (e.g., if a calculator is not permitted for a particular mathematics testlet).

Avoiding Locked iPads During Testing

Before launching Kite® Student Portal, please ensure that the iPad has an established internet connection. Restarting the iPad and inputting the quit password may be required if the application opens without a connection to the internet.

Students who take the Dynamic Learning Maps® (DLM®) alternate assessment on an iPad should close the Kite Student Portal app once the testing session is complete. To close the app, tap the Close Kite button at the top of the home screen or select the Sign Out button. If you select the Sign Out button, then tap the Close Kite button on the login page. Tap Quit in the pop-up window that appears.

Do not simply "X" out of the Student Portal app, or the app will become locked.

Once you tap Quit, the iPad is no longer in a secure-locked mode. A pop-up will appear indicating the exam is finished. Close the app by tapping the Home button or swiping up on the screen.

It is important to close the app either using the Close Kite button or Sign Out button in order to prevent the app from locking up, which requires a hard reset of the iPad. If the app is locked, test administrators will need to contact the DLM Service Desk to complete a hard reset.

Alternate Text

A TIP associated with a testlet that contains images (either in text, the engagement activity, testlet items, or picture response cards) includes alternate text for the test administrator to use with students who are blind or who have visual impairment.

The only exception occurs when the alternate text, if provided, would cue the student to the correct answer. For example, if a student is asked to identify which shape is a triangle, the TIP would not include alternate text that named the shapes in the response options. In that instance, the alternate text page would instruct, “Do not describe.” The teacher would then use objects, tactile graphics, or individual tactile representations of the pictures or objects presented onscreen for those students who are unable to rely on screen visuals.
